Gilmanton Iron Works
Our village earned its name back in the late 1700s when it was a bustling industrial hub. Long before it was the peaceful residential escape it is today, the Suncook River powered a massive iron mining and smelting enterprise. Once known as “Averytown,” a gritty center of production that utilized the water from Crystal Lake to fuel New Hampshire’s early economy.
However, the defining moment for our community came in 1915. A devastating fire swept through the village, consuming the original stores, homes, and the heart of our industry. It was a tragedy that could have ended us, but like the iron we once forged, the people here proved unbreakable. We rebuilt, transitioning from an industrial powerhouse to the charming, historic
scenic village we love today. The Gilmanton Ironworks Library, rebuilt in its beautiful Colonial Revival style, stands as a testament to that era of recovery.
